I kind of remember someone once saying that if you date someone for 10 years you automatically become legally married. Is this true? and if it is, does it only apply if you've lived together for 10 years or just dated? If you date someone for 10 years are you legally married?
Common law marriage differs from state to state. If you date someone for 10 years are you legally married?
No, you're not automatically married. What they are refering to is if a couple has been together 10 years and living together they can recieve married benefits. Meaning you can file taxes jointly -as if you are married- though you're not married. Also, most insurance companies will let you add your partner on and recieve benefits even though they're not married.
So, after 10 years, and currently living together, I guess you can see as in some legal sence you get married benefits. However, there are some benefits you may not get like visitation at hospitals or perhaps other death benefits if the case arose.
Good luck!
It depends on the State in which you live. There are a lot of States that do not recognize that type of thing. If there are children involved it complicates the legal aspect of things if your pardner dies. Why don't you get married? That the simple and right thing to do.
i'm pretty sure that's only for cohabitation, not just dating. dating would be pretty hard to prove legally anyways, so the living together and having the same address thing would make a lot more sense.
It depends on the state. Not all states recognize common law marriages and the length of time varies from state to state. You'd have to google your state common laws to find out for sure.
Good Luck!
No, you could date someone forever and you would never be considered legally married.
Your not married. Some states have common law marriage.
Sorry to disappoint you but no, you are not....and very few states recognize Common Law marriages, too.
